Are you called to help the Dead cross over?
Are you called to tend to those that are "stuck?" Are you called to help heal Mother Earth and those that have died upon her bosom? Maybe you are called to do the work of a Psychopomp...
To tend to the dead with honour
with integrity
To tend to the dead with peace
with calmness
To tend to the dead with compassion
with hope.
That is the role of a Psychopomp
That is the role of one
who helps guide
deceased spirits
Home.
In today’s world
where death is constantly written in newspapers,
seen on television,
heard over the radio,
the role of a Psychopomp is needed more
than ever before.
Where once we lived in community
today we live in isolation,
where once the dead were honoured
today the dead are feared,
where once our lives felt safer
today school massacres are riot.
Where once World Wars
hoped to end all wars
today the guns keep firing,
where once we honoured
land, sea and sky
today we desecrate it all.
Where once we had ancient trees
and open lands afar
today we have fallen trees
and holes for gold and ore.
Death -
humans
animals
the land
Death -
war
devastation
innocent lives
Death -
quick
sudden
startling
Death -
expected
shocking
overwhelming
Death -
Yes,
IT IS an integral part of life
an important part of the living
However,
when there is so much death
so much destruction
when we live in a society that
fears death
and shuns it,
yet looks at life
as though there is a right to kill
deceased spirits need our help.
Sometimes the dead get stuck.
Sometimes the dead need help.
Sometimes the dead are in shock.
Sometimes the dead are here for healing.
Sometimes the land needs help to heal.
Sometimes the ancestors need help to move on.
Sometimes the spirits need someone to listen.
Sometimes the dead need someone who cares.
Over 25 years ago, when I began my Shamanic Training for the first time, I learnt of the word “Psychopomp.”
PSYCHOPOMP
derived from the Greek words pompos (conductor or guide) and psyche (breath, life, soul, or mind)
A Guide to help deceased souls transition between life and death
in a way that honours and respects them
released of judgement, shame and guilt.
While I have always been able to feel/see spirits - of the human and natural kind (spirits of the elements, trees etc) - I was unaware of the role of a Psychopomp.
Since then I have been learning all I can to understand the realms of spirit - both from a Shamanic and Druidic point of view.
Learning skills of healing and connection
Learning the wisdoms of the earth - land, sea and sky
Learning about the cycles of rebirth, life and death
The living
The dying
The dead
The dead -
learning how to heal those that are “stuck earth bound,”
those that are “held here,”
those that are too shocked to realise that they have died.
And in doing so I have learnt how to help heal Mother Earth,
of the heaviness that holding so many dead can have on her,
and in doing so I have learnt how to honour the dead
in ways that now shape how I hold space
for the living,
the dying
and the deceased.
When I first learnt about Psychopomp I remember the relief and a sense of inner strength I felt knowing that I could do something extraordinarily precious to help - at times sad, lost, forlorn, angry, agitated, empty, happy, excited, relieved, and all the time meaningful spirits to go Home.
Home.
Wherever that was/is for them.
Home.
So that they can finally be at peace.
Home
To loved ones that are waiting for them beyond this earthly realm.
To be a Psychopomp
to help deceased souls go Home
released of fear,
of judgement,
of shame
is a calling.
Maybe you too have heard that call?
Maybe you too can hear the voices,
feel the call in the wind,
feel the breath in the silence,
Maybe you too have intuitively guided spirits across the threshold,
because you have stepped aside from fear and paranoia
to tend to the dead with love and compassion,
to tend to the dead with integrity and honour,
to tend to the dead released of “Halloween” fantasy or horror film mania
rather to tend the dead with the exquisite sounds of love,
compassion
and discernment.
To be a Psychopomp
is to be a bridge between the living and the dead
it is to be the messenger for the living while the dead cross over
and it is to be a conduit for divine healing
I have helped communicate with spirits that live in the hallway
that live in the corridors
that live in the earth
and have helped and guide them to feel more at peace
so that they can walk their final walk
Home.
And I do this because of a deeper calling.
A calling that invites me to help heal Mother Earth,
A calling that invites me to help heal our ancestors and our generations past, present and future
A calling that invites me to help protect the sacred thresholds
so that any loved one that passes
can do so feeling safe and respected,
and can do so with honour, integrity and ease.
Death is a sacred threshold to be crossed.
Our final journey
to be treated and held with love and respect.
Yet many die in ways
that are anything other than sacred.
“I need help and you, the person who can feel me in the hallway, the person who can feel me in the hospital, the person who can feel me in the land, YOU can help me, and in helping me I can also help you.”
I believe strongly if we can feel spirits linger - deceased spirits of humans, animals, and of the land -
Linger in such places as
Mass death - war, genocide, school massacres
Accidental death - school camps that have gone wrong, plane crashes, car accidents
Suicide and Loneliness - both on the rise as a cause of death
Ancestral death - witch hunt, poverty, holocaust victims
Hospitals
Cemeteries
Gaols
Land death - mining, cutting of old growth trees, polluting seas -
it is our responsibility to help them go Home - whether that be us personally or that we call on someone who has the skills to help.
- it is our responsibility to offer them safe passage from this realm to their divine Home.
This work - helping Lost Spirits cross over -
this work - Psychopomp - is a calling that comes from SERVICE.
SERVICE
to those that have lost their way,
to those that are too shocked to realise they have died,
to those that are bound here for whatever ethos, contract, vow they may have made
It is time to teach these skills.
It is time to share this wisdom
It is time to talk more about death and lost souls and how to help them.

I’ve always considered myself to be one that has a different relationship with death. Though it’s saddening and full of grief for those left alive, I see it as on opportunity, a doorway, or a lease from suffering. I once thought I’d become a death doula. Though my work has led me in other directions (working to reconnect others to the land and themselves as with as listening to the ancestors). I seem to linger around the desire to work with the death those at their death door. Yet, I don’t know if that falls under the Psychopomp realm.
This is my first time hearing the world psychopomp. I’ve always referred to this as death doula, but perhaps the context is a bit different. I love that you wrote about death with so much love and reverence and that you’re helping those who are here to help the souls that need it. This is powerful work!
