Sometimes,
and more often than not,
it is just perfect to sit in the silence
and
JUST
WAIT…
My dear friend,
I feel that I am in a waiting room of some sort.
I feel that I have prepared myself to be here
and yet
Where is Here
What Am I Waiting For?!
Or have I just found myself here
stumbling along life’s path???
Do you ever feel like that -
That you have read all the books
done all the preparation
completed all the “forms”
signed on the dotted line
paid the deposit,
completed the courses,
spoken to the “right” people
you know where you wish to go,
(or at least think you do!)
and yet you are HERE
in what seems to be
THE WAITING ROOM…
My dear friend,
Do you know what you are waiting for?
Are you waiting for the rain to stop
or the rain to come?
Are you waiting for the days to get cooler
or the days to get hotter?
Are you waiting for the bus to come
or the lights to go green?
Are you waiting for the kettle to boil
or the washing to dry?
Or maybe you are waiting for the baby to wake up
or for the baby
to go to sleep?
Maybe we are both waiting for something else
something more…
Maybe we are waiting
for Inspiration - to burst through the door and make our life sparkle;
or Calmness - to quietly sit beside us and gently soothe our nerves,
or maybe we are waiting for Abundance or Finances,
Good Health or A Pain Free Day;
Maybe we are waiting for the Stresses to melt
and the Tension to subside,
the Tears to flow
and the Anger to soothe
Maybe we are waiting for the “Dream” to be lived
Or
Just to be imagined?
Maybe we are waiting for our smile to return
or our heart to be held?
Or maybe we are waiting for Life.
Or Death.
The End.
Maybe we are just here
waiting
for nothing.
and everything.
All we can do is just put our suitcases down in this waiting room
and know
that the train will come..
EVENTUALLY.
And it will take us to the place where we want to go
EVENTUALLY.
Sometimes in the Waiting Room all we seem to hear are the sounds of bickering, complaining, anxiety, stress…
”I’m going to be late.”
”When is it coming?!”
”Can we go now?”
”Why aren’t they doing anything about it?!”
And then we see something else
Beyond the noise
Beyond the stress
We see a child juggling perfectly.
We see another delicately touching the flowers in the flower box.
We see an elderly couple reading the newspaper,
And others sharing a conversation,
We see the station master give out comic books
And someone else offering biscuits,
We hear a gentle guitar being strummed
and someone practicing rhymes
Some folk step outside,
despite the blowing wind,
We see them come inside
their faces glowing from the wind.
We see children skipping and running
And parents smiling at their skills,
We see people walking together
We see some folk,
all alone.
Let me take your hand my dear friend,
and let us look around -
Can we too appreciate our time here?
Maybe we can try and juggle,
not in a tiring “oh-I-can’t-do-this” kind of way
rather in a fun,
playful,
mistakes-are-made-and-enjoyed kind of way;
Or maybe we can just step outside
in the blowy blustering weather
and feel the wind upon our faces
and the cool air upon our skin.
We are waiting,
Yet we do not need to wait in four walls.
We can roam
We can walk outside.
We can see the birds fly.
We can see the leaves dance.
We can notice the flowers growing.
We can see the clouds.
We can hear the distant roll of thunder.
We can feel the pitter patter of the rain.
We are lucky to wait like this…
So let us all take a deep breath
A deep breath in
And a gentle
slow
breath out
The train WILL come…
My friend,
Where DO YOU want to go?
Where DO YOU want to be?
And WHY?
And if the train came and then went the round-a-bout way
would you get on it,
or would you wait
until the express train came?
And if you realised you were sitting in the wrong station
would you get up and move
or would you stay,
and
for how long?
Sometimes we have to wait
just because we have to realise where we ARE
and acknowledge where we have COME FROM
for only then
can we see
where we REALLY WANT TO BE.
So just for this moment,
Shall we sit together,
Shall we share some food,
a drink?
Shall we contemplate this waiting room and consider our path…
What does your waiting room look like?
What are you really waiting for?
What has it been like to wait?
Where have you come from?
Where do you REALLY want to go?
And if you could ask yourself,
how can I make this Waiting more comfortable,
more peaceful and soft,
more simple and still,
What would you say to yourself?
What would you offer yourself?
Sometimes,
and more often than not,
it is just perfect to sit
and
JUST
WAIT…
Until next time,
Blessed be

Oh my Sam I am too in the waiting room. Sometimes pacing, sometimes huffing and puffing, sometimes in a state of relaxed anticipation. I am happy to wait here with you when you paint such a lovely picture xx
Waiting... I loved this Sam. I can relate deeply with what you started with, "That you have read all the books, done all the preparation, completed all the “forms”, signed on the dotted line, paid the deposit, completed the courses, spoken to the “right” people!" And there is still waiting. Waiting for what? Enlightenment, awakening, aha moments where it all comes together after all the study, meditation, chanting and discourses? To finally cross that threshold that I have been promised? Hmmm. I have come to see there is no line in the sand, just this. As your name of this substack reveals, it is soft, simple and still. Thought it does not always feel that way. There is anxiousness, worry, grief and pain. Yet as we discussed on our call, they have a place at my table. I sit with them. Learn from them., And walk into their depths. Being with what is. Not fighting it... just this!
